Four Canoes Hotel took its name from the Legend of the Four Canoes and the Legends of Mataatua, Takitimu, Horouta and Te Arawa, four Chiefs from the Maori ancestral home of Hawaiki. Legend has it that these four Chiefs gathered their families and their tribes and set off south to a promised land, Te Aotearoa or Land of the Long White Cloud. A very unique feature is the traditional Wharenui (Maori Meeting House) which was built to host conferences and Maori Concerts.
