07 January 2012
High fructose corn syrup is a manufactured sweetener derived from a natural source but the sweetener itself is far from being natural. There are many side effects to consuming this particular product and unfortunately, it has permeated nearly every processed food source known to man. The dangers of high fructose corn syrup are many and varied, and the overall health of consumers may be at risk.
It is linked to such diseases and conditions as Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and insulin resistance as well as hypertension. These conditions collectively are known as the metabolic syndrome and it has been increasing in our society as the consumption of the chemical increases. The two are correlated and it shows no signs of slowing down.
There are ways to avoid many of these diseases that are creeping into our society at an alarming rate. One such way is to limit our consumption of this chemical sweetener and even regular table sugar as it contains part of the chemical composition as well. By limiting or eliminating these elements from our diet, you can improve your chances of living a healthier lifestyle in spite of numerous processed foods containing these chemicals.
If at all possible, choose a healthy diet of fresh fruits and vegetables and fish. Organically grown food sources are best but if that is not within your budget choose low-fat dairy products and fewer meats along with fresh servings of fruits and vegetables.
Also, before you purchase any food source such as breads, beverages, and cereals make sure that you read the label to see what it contains. You will be surprised to learn that this manufactured sweetener is in some pretty common things eaten such salad dressings and breads. The biggest offender is sweetened soft drinks as they contain the highest amounts of this chemical. So avoiding beverages that are sweetened will eliminate many of the dangers of high fructose corn syrup.
